Interestingly, you can see in the below graph that HubPages.com trafic is definitely getting closer to ezinearticles.com traffic. Ezinearticles.com is the biggest and most widely trafficked article directory on the web. Article directories seem to be losing steam while sites like HubPages and Squidoo gain steam. I’d definitely recommend making HubPages a part of your overall internet marketing game plan. If not, you’re likely losing a key component to your strategy.

The great thing about using HubPages is that you can also have control over your member profile and have the ability to add some quality backlinks to other sites with some Page Rank behind it. Currently, my profile is a PR3. Again, it’s a piece in my overall strategy on the web.

Squidoo is probably the most direct comparison to HubPages – much more so than article directories or blogs. Squidoo is similar in that you can quickly create web pages (called Hubs on HubPages and lens on Squidoo). Squidoo is probably a little bigger and has some more flexibility. You can create additional modules in your lens such as Cafe Press where you’re pretty much limited to Amazon, ebay and adsense in HubPages. The sharing is a little better in HubPages but still decent on Squidoo.

For me, I like the user interface on HubPages slightly better and I think that Squidoo is a little more saturated especially with internet marketers; as such, I prefer HubPages. Using both, however, might be a sound strategy as you expand your web presence.

Your HubPages profile can become a very important resource for your overall web strategy. Not only can your HubPages profile get page rank which can help you get quality backlinks to your other sites, but your HubPages profile can get some decent traffic on its own thus funneling new visitors to some of your blogs.

How do you get traffic to your profile?

Simply put, you get traffic to your profile by getting traffic to your Hubs. When someone likes one of your hubs, they might want to read more of what you have to say and will check out your profile. Furthermore, by being more active in the HubPages community, you can increase your presence and therefore, increase your profile traffic.

Be sure to beef up your profile and include not just links to your other sites but some good information on them. Check out my profile for some examples of what I’m talking about.

Simply put, HubPages is a platform that allows anybody to write content and publish it to the web. You can create content-rich “Hubs” which are like mini-websites or web pages on a specific topic. Each Hub includes a title, text content, various sub-headings, you can include images and other interactive elements for users to view and interact with.

How is HubPages different than a blog?

Typically, someone owns a blog. When you own a blog it might be your own domain name or a subdomain of a blogging site like blogspot.com. A blog is your own site. HubPages is not your own site. You can publish content on HubPages instead of your blog – which brings us to the next question…

Why would you publish on HubPages when you can have your own blog?

Well, Hubpages because of its size and recognition has a greater standing on the internet than a blog you start up. Because of this, you can get your content indexed on google faster and potentially rank it higher on search engine result pages. This might help you monetize your content better than if it were on your own blog. With that said, that are times when you will want to focus on your own blog versus HubPages. For more information on this topic, check out How HubPages Fits In To Your Larger Online Business Picture.

How is HubPages different than an article directory?

HubPages has some similarities with article directories such as ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com, but here are a few differences:

Hubs are more “content rich” versus regular articles ad directories. With Hubs, you can add images and other forms of communication (like a questionaire or poll).

HubPages has more of a community element than article directories

Most article directories do not offer you the ability to share advertising revenue

For these reasons, I believe HubPages is far superior to article directories.

HubPages might be one of the more underrated websites on the internet. With unique visitors over 10 million in July 2010 (according to Compete), the traffic on HubPages is impressive to say the least. Similarly, the user/author base on HubPages isn’t saturated which means you can really get a lot of bang for your buck as an internet marketer or online writer by using HubPages.

With the reputation and traffic of HubPages growing, HubPages is a high quality piece to your online business model that you should be maximizing.

I’d encourage you to get in now while HubPages is still relatively in the early phases. For more information on how to get started, check out the Quick Start Guide to get you up and running fast.
